Homeward Bound has a lot of licensing regulations they need to cover via their training modules. Some of these regulations require periodic refresher courses every employee must take. With hundreds of employees across the US, it was challenging for them to train as well as maintain the required records. Auzmor Learn gave them a platform to train all of their employees simultaneously and effectively. Onboarding new employees

Homeward Bound had a week-long onboarding process that Grant and his assistant facilitated; they taught the required classes and licensing regulations in-person to the new hires. It got really challenging for them to conduct onboarding training for employees from various locations and hold the interest of their employees for longer than an hour. Grant implemented Auzmor Learn and started conducting onboarding training for their employees online during COVID. They liked the setup so much that they still conduct 90% of the onboarding training through Auzmor and 10% in person.

Training structure

The training structure was inefficient and mainly consisted of presentations being emailed to employees via SharePoint. Grant recounts, “the employees could answer the questions wrongly as many times as they wanted, and this way they were not learning anything.” This method allowed the employees to complete a 3-hour long training in 5 minutes. He was looking for a comprehensive solution that could facilitate accountability in their employees. Auzmor Learn has several features that helped Homeward Bound streamline its training process. For example, the Paths feature enabled them to assign multiple courses to a user in one go. They were also able to set up assessments for each course and modify the completion requirements. Auzmor Learn has notification features that can be activated while setting up the course, eliminating the need for Grant to follow up with the employees to take the required courses.

What was the company culture like at Homeward Bound before Auzmor and how did it change?

“Training and development was not the focal point before we implemented Auzmor. The process was scattered and it was really difficult to track everything. The employees had gotten used to the way things were and when we implemented Auzmor, there was a lot of pushback since the employees had to take all their training seriously and in the appropriate time frame. But after a while, the mindset shifted and people started realizing the importance of training and how it is benefiting them. We now have over 14k trackable training completions.”

What do you do to keep engagement consistent within the platform?

“We introduced an incentive model when we first implemented Auzmor Learn to make it interesting for our employees. For example, if there is a certain training that every employee has to take, we’d offer gift vouchers to the first 5 employees who complete the training. Now since our employees have had the time to adjust to the new form of training, we have phased out the incentives. To keep the engagement consistent, I often include humorous bits in the training modules that are over 2 hours long and dry with regard to content. I take the time to edit videos and ensure that the learners are engaged throughout.”

What are two pieces of advice you’d give to new LMS buyers?

“First, I would suggest not being intimidated by an LMS. It’s okay to try things and screw them up. You can always learn from your mistakes. Second, I have seen a lot of people have trouble asking for advice and help when needed. To those people, I would recommend stepping out of their comfort zone and asking for advice. It could really make a difference.”
